Disasters and poverty
The New York Times described the terrorist attacks of 9-11 as a "disaster for the working poor", noting that unskilled, low-income employees were most likely to be displaced and had few resources to mitigate their losses. This is also the experience of disaster for the poorest people in the developing world who, unfortunately, are the most likely to experience disaster. The World Bank's Development Report founded that 94% of the world's major disasters during the past decade were in developing countries.

Childs Capital is working to mitigate the risk of disaster to the poorest entrepreneurs in the developing world. We were recognized for our efforts in this area by the United Nations Development Program, the International Chambers of Commerce and the Prince of Wales' International Business Leaders' Forum. Together, these organizations established the World Business Awards to recognize the work done by businesses in support of the Millennium Development Goals. The devastation caused by the recent tsunami illustrates the urgency of the need to protect the most vulnerable from natural disasters.
